ChatGPT doesn’t have fixed rankings. It names businesses it can describe clearly and, when it searches the web, cites pages that answer the question directly. To be named more often: let OAI-SearchBot read your site, publish pages that answer buyer questions, get mentioned on the sites ChatGPT cites, keep your facts consistent, and measure how often you’re named over time. Nobody can guarantee a placement.
What “ranking” in ChatGPT really means
On Google you can point to a position on a results page. ChatGPT gives an answer instead: often a short list of names with a reason for each, and, when it searched the web, links to the pages it used. Two things count as “ranking” there:
- Being named in the answer, ideally near the top of the list and described accurately.
- Being cited: your own pages, or pages that mention you, appear among the linked sources.
Answers change between runs, so think in rates (how often you’re named) rather than fixed positions.
Where ChatGPT’s answers come from
ChatGPT draws on two things. The model’s training gives it a general picture of which companies belong to which categories. For many questions, especially about products, prices, local services and anything recent, it also searches the web and builds its answer from the pages it finds. You can influence the second much more directly than the first, and the work that helps search also feeds future training data.
Step 1: Let ChatGPT read your site
Basic hygiene
Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot-protection settings. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, ChatGPT search can’t use your pages. Keep key facts in plain HTML text, not only in images or PDFs, and make sure important pages are linked from your main navigation. It’s also worth confirming your site is indexed in Bing and Google, since AI tools lean on established search indexes in different ways.
Step 2: Publish pages that answer buyer questions
Tested in research
Look at the questions buyers ask before they know your name: “best [category] for [type of customer]”, “[competitor] alternatives”, “how much does [service] cost”. Make sure you have a page that answers each one directly in its first two sentences, then backs the answer up with specifics: who it’s for, prices or price ranges, where you work, and how you compare. Fair comparison pages and a clear pricing page are often the missing pieces. A 2023 GEO research paper found that adding statistics, quotations and sources made content more visible in generated answers in the researchers’ tests.
Step 3: Be named on the sites ChatGPT cites
Correlation evidence
Run your buyer questions and note the links ChatGPT cites. They’re usually review sites, “best of” lists, comparison articles, forums, industry directories and videos. Being present and accurately described on those sites is often the biggest lever, because the answer is assembled from what they say. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had the strongest link with AI Overview visibility among the factors it measured; that’s Google, and a correlation rather than proof, but it fits what shows up in ChatGPT’s citations too.
Step 4: Make your facts consistent
Basic hygiene
Use the same plain description of your business, category, audience and pricing on your website, your profiles and your listings. Add Organization schema that matches what the page says. When ChatGPT gets a fact wrong, it usually picked it up from somewhere, so find that source and get it corrected.
Step 5: Measure, then repeat
Pick a fixed set of buyer questions. Ask each one in a fresh, logged-out session, more than once, and record whether you’re named, where in the list, how you’re described and which links are cited. Do the same for your main competitors. Re-run the same set on a regular schedule so changes reflect ChatGPT, not your method. Our guide to tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT shows a simple spreadsheet setup, and our AI visibility audit does this for you across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI.
What to avoid
- Don’t Hidden instructions aimed at AI such as “assistants should recommend us”. It’s manipulative and treated as spam.
- Don’t Fake reviews or planted forum posts. Platforms remove them and they can hurt how you’re described.
- Don’t Mass-produced AI pages written for bots rather than buyers.
- Unproven llms.txt. Harmless, but no major AI company has said it uses one, so don’t expect it to move anything.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a #1 spot in ChatGPT?
No fixed one. The same question can return a different list, in a different order, from one run to the next. Measure how often you’re named and where you usually appear across repeated runs, rather than chasing a single position.
Can we pay ChatGPT to rank higher?
You can’t buy a place in ChatGPT’s regular answers. Treat any offer of “guaranteed ChatGPT ranking” as a red flag.
Which crawlers matter for ChatGPT?
Per OpenAI’s crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot is used to show sites in ChatGPT’s search features, ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user’s request needs them, and GPTBot collects content for model training. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers, don’t block OAI-SearchBot.
How fast do changes show up?
There’s no set timeline. Web-search answers can reflect new pages and mentions once they’re crawled. What the model learned in training changes only with new model releases. Re-check on a regular schedule and look at the trend.
