How to get cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

How Google’s AI features choose the pages they cite, what a small business website can actually change, and how to check whether you’re cited today.

Short answer

AI Overviews and AI Mode cite pages from Google’s own index. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet; there’s no special markup. To be more likely to be cited: make sure your key pages are indexed, answer the question in the first two sentences, and earn mentions on the third-party sites Google already cites. Schema helps a little; nothing guarantees a citation.

How AI Overviews choose sources

AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google Search. According to Google’s own guidance on AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be used as a supporting link, and there are no extra technical requirements beyond that. Both features may use “query fan-out”: running several related searches across subtopics to build the answer, which means a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well even if it doesn’t rank for the main query.

Sample data

In our sample audit, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode each named the sample brand in 83% of their answers, against 100% in ChatGPT. Engines differ, so measure them separately.

Sample data: our anonymized sample audit of a well-known sales CRM (not a client), November 2026, 26 answers across 5 engines. Results vary from run to run.

Be indexable and rank first

Basic hygiene

SEO basics still apply. If Googlebot can’t crawl a page, or the page isn’t indexed, it can’t be cited. Check Search Console’s page indexing report for your key pages, keep important content in HTML text rather than images or PDFs only, make sure internal links reach it, and don’t use nosnippet on pages you want quoted.

Answer the question in the first two sentences

Tested in research

Put the direct answer at the top of the section that addresses each question, in plain language, then support it with specifics: numbers, steps, named options, sources. Use descriptive headings that mirror how customers phrase the question. A 2023 GEO research paper found that adding statistics, quotations and citations made content more visible in generated answers in the researchers’ tests.

Earn mentions on the sites Google cites

Correlation evidence

For many questions customers ask, the cited sources aren’t business websites but review platforms, comparison articles, forums and videos. Check which ones appear for your questions and work on being present and accurately described there. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had the strongest link with AI Overview visibility of the factors it measured. That’s a correlation, not proof of cause.

Do behind-the-scenes page labels help?

Basic hygiene

Honestly: a little, indirectly. Structured data helps Google understand who you are and what a page is about, and Google requires it to match the visible content. We haven’t seen convincing evidence that schema alone earns AI Overview citations. Add Organization, product or service, and FAQ markup where it fits, validate it, and spend most of your effort on the content and mentions above.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear at the top of some regular search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience for longer and follow-up questions. The eligibility rules are the same. Because they choose sources differently, track them separately.

How to check if you’re cited

  1. Search your customers’ questions in a private window, signed out, from the location you sell to.
  2. Note whether an AI Overview appears at all: it doesn’t trigger for every query or every time.
  3. Expand the sources and record whether your pages, or pages that mention you, are cited.
  4. Ask the same questions in AI Mode.
  5. Repeat on another day. Record everything in a sheet so you can see the trend.

Frequently asked questions

Do behind-the-scenes page labels help you show up in AI Overviews?

These labels (schema, or structured data) help Google read your facts consistently, and Google says structured data should match what’s visible on the page. Tests so far suggest it moves citations little on its own. Treat it as hygiene, not a lever.

Does blocking Google-Extended keep us out of AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for Gemini models; Google says it doesn’t affect inclusion in Google Search, including AI Overviews. Snippet controls such as nosnippet do limit how your content appears in AI features.

Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Google includes clicks and impressions from AI features in the overall Search Console Performance report (Web search type), but doesn’t report them separately. To see whether you’re cited for a specific question, you still have to check the results.

Can anyone guarantee an AI Overview citation?

No. Google chooses sources per query and the result changes over time. You can make your pages eligible and useful, and measure the trend.
